The Countryside Code

The Countryside Code has been updated for the first time since the 1950's original...
1950's Countryside Code
- Enjoy the countryside and respect its life and work
- Guard against all risk of fire
- Fasten all gates
- Keep your dogs under close control
- Keep to public paths across farmland
- Use gates and stiles to cross fences, hedges and walls
- Leave livestock, crops and machinery alone
- Take your litter home
- Help to keep all water clean
- Protect wildlife, plants and trees
- Take special care on country roads
- Make no unnecessary noise
You can download a history as well as a leaflet of the code if you're so inclined.
The biggest change appears to be "Leave gates as you find them". The old rule was to close all gates. Not sure which makes more sense. Anyway, thought some people may be interested -- especially those of you not from the UK who must be astonished that we even have rules for the countryside! Unless that is you have rules too? Do you? :)
I certainly remember the country code, I learned about it in school I believe. For the most part it was common sense and courtesy. Probably it's not even mentioned in schools now so maybe it's a good thing that they are attempting to publicize it by updating it.
