It must be nearly summer...

... as the annual yawnfest that is Big Brother starts this evening (in case you're in any doubt, C and myself will NOT be watching).

I cannot understand the appeal of this "show" at all and quite why so many people seem intent on watching hours and hours and hours of people sat round in a house getting drunk and talking complete inanities I really don't get...

This year there is an alternative (well, you could turn OFF the TV and read a book or something but this is something else). Welcome to Watching Paint Dry!

Forget Big Brother. Watching Paint Dry is the new reality show. The first reality show to do exactly what it says on the tin.

Every day a different kind of paint will be put on to a wall. Confirmed contestants include; matt, silk, gloss, satin, vinyl, eggshell textured and smooth masonry - all of whom are eagerly looking forward to their first brush with fame.

Sounds like it'll be much more entertaining...

I wish there were a way to avoid Big Brother when it's on but there really isn't -- even the broadsheet newspapers (like the Times and the Guardian) end up getting themselves involved. Yuk!

Anyone got any thoughts on how to avoid this rubbish, other than attempting to hibernate for the next however many weeks its on?

It really burns me up that Channel 4 will show up to 54 episodes of Friends in a week then show goodness only knows how many hours of Big Brother every week but they won't get off their lazy arses and show Series 5 of one of the best dramas the US has ever produced.

I'm with you, we also have the curse of so called reality shows on this side of the pond too unfortunately. I reckon it's because there's so many channels now everything gets watered down quality wise or maybe they are reaching for anything that gets any kind of ratings.

The rumour is that Series 5 will be on from June 8th......

God it's all so dull isn't it? I'm pleased to say that I've never watched Big Brother but as you say there is no way to avoid it; it's in the papers all the time and (some) colleagues in the office insist on talking about it during smoking breaks. It also spawned that amazing celebrity creature, Jade Goodey.

LOL... well, guess I like 'dull' tellevision? I do enjoy watching Survivor, Big Brother too. I like watching how people act and react in these unusual circumstances. *shrug* guess there has to be the fans and non-fans ... we are not all created with the same likes and the networks are grateful!
